South India Personal Tours
South India doesn’t fit into one picture. In a single trip you can watch priests carry a deity through a temple corridor at night, wake up on a houseboat in Kerala, and walk through the ruins of a capital that once sold gems in its open markets. The top South India destinations sit fairly close to each other, the highways are in good shape, and every state has its own language, food, and pace of life. That variety is exactly why so many travelers plan a dedicated trip here instead of treating it as an add-on.
This page brings together the places to visit in South India that we plan trips around most often. Each one has its own page with things to see, how to get there, and the tours that include it. Use this overview to understand what each region offers, then pick the ones that match your interests and start shaping your South India private tour.
Tamil Nadu is where Dravidian temple architecture reached its peak, and it’s the heart of most South India temple tours. Madurai is the headline stop, home to the Meenakshi Amman Temple with its 14 gateway towers covered in thousands of painted figures. Visit in the evening for the night ceremony, when the temple fills with drums, oil lamps, and chanting. A few hours away, Thanjavur’s Brihadeeswara Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has stood for more than 1,000 years, and its granite tower is still one of the tallest of its kind in India.
The coast has its own story. The Shore Temple and rock-cut carvings of Mahabalipuram sit about an hour south of Chennai, the state capital and the main arrival point for many travelers. Further down, Pondicherry brings a change of mood with French-era streets, yellow colonial houses, and quiet seaside cafés. For a spiritual detour, Rameswaram is one of the holiest pilgrimage towns in India, known for its long temple corridors.
When the plains get warm, head for the hills. Ooty and Kodaikanal offer cool air, lakes, and tea gardens, and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train to Ooty is a highlight for families. Food lovers should save a night for Chettinad, where grand old merchant mansions sit next to kitchens known for some of the boldest, most peppery cooking in the country.
Kerala tourism is built around water, greenery, and a slower way of life. Kochi is the usual starting point, and its old Fort Kochi area is easy to explore on foot. Chinese fishing nets line the waterfront, and a historic synagogue, Portuguese churches, and Dutch-era buildings all sit within a short walk of each other.
From Kochi, most Kerala tour packages head to the backwaters. Alleppey (Alappuzha) and Kumarakom are the best bases for an overnight Kerala houseboat stay, drifting past paddy fields, village homes, and coconut groves while an onboard cook prepares fresh fish curry. Inland, Munnar is famous for its rolling tea estates and misty viewpoints, while Thekkady offers spice plantation walks, bamboo rafting, and boat rides inside Periyar Tiger Reserve.
To finish the trip, the beaches of Kovalam and Varkala are ideal for a few easy days by the sea. Kerala is also the home of traditional Ayurveda, so many travelers book a massage or a longer wellness program, and an evening of Kathakali dance is worth seeing at least once.
Mysore is Karnataka’s royal city and one of the most popular South India destinations for history and culture. The Mysore Palace is the main attraction, and on Sunday evenings it’s lit with nearly 100,000 bulbs. The city is also known for silk sarees, sandalwood, and its busy Devaraja Market.
Hampi, once the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site spread across a landscape of giant boulders, temples, and old bazaar streets. Plan at least two days here, ideally with a sunrise or sunset from one of the hilltops. For something greener, Coorg is India’s coffee country, with misty estates, waterfalls, and comfortable plantation homestays. Bangalore works well as an arrival city and a convenient starting point for all three.
Many travelers add Goa to their South India tour packages for a few relaxed days of beaches, seafood, and Portuguese-era churches. Hyderabad offers a different flavor altogether, with the Charminar, Golconda Fort, the Chowmahalla Palace, Ramoji Film City, and some of the best biryani you’ll find anywhere in India.
The best time to visit South India is from October to March, when days are warm, humidity is lower, and sightseeing is comfortable. This is peak season, so it’s smart to book hotels and houseboats early, especially around Christmas and New Year.
April and May get very hot on the plains, which makes this a good time for hill stations like Ooty, Munnar, Kodaikanal, and Coorg. The monsoon, from June to September, brings heavy rain to the coast but turns Kerala bright green, and it’s traditionally considered the best season for Ayurvedic treatments. Prices are also lower during these months.
Every South India private tour we plan is built from scratch around your dates, budget, and interests. You get a private air-conditioned car with an experienced driver, hotels chosen for your comfort level, and licensed local guides at the major sites. No fixed group departures and no rushed schedules.
A first visit usually covers 10 to 14 days across two or three states. A popular route is Chennai, Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Thanjavur, Madurai, and then into Kerala for Munnar, Thekkady, and the backwaters. If you’re also seeing North India, it’s easy to combine your trip with the Golden Triangle tour of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, with a short domestic flight connecting the two.
