Wayanad Expedition

Arrive at Calicut (Kozhikode) Airport or railway station and meet the driver for the journey towards Vythiri in Wayanad. Leaving the coastal plains behind, the road gradually approaches the Western Ghats and begins climbing through a series of bends towards the highlands. The transition from busy lowland Kerala to forested mountain scenery is one of the defining experiences of the route.

Pause at Lakkidi View Point, subject to suitable weather and safe stopping conditions. Located near the gateway to Wayanad, the viewpoint looks across the hills and valleys towards the lower plains. Continue towards Pookode Lake, a freshwater lake surrounded by wooded slopes, where available activities depend on local operating conditions and opening hours.

Proceed to Vythiri and check into the hotel or resort. Depending on arrival time and weather, spend the later afternoon enjoying the plantation and forest surroundings rather than adding a distant excursion. The cooler climate and green hills provide an easy introduction to Wayanad before the fuller sightseeing programme the following day. Overnight stay in Vythiri.

After breakfast, travel towards Sulthan Bathery and continue to Edakkal Caves, one of Wayanad's most significant archaeological attractions. Reaching the caves requires an uphill approach and walking over uneven terrain, so the visit should be undertaken according to individual fitness, weather and official access conditions. Inside the rock shelter are ancient engravings that give the site its particular historical importance.

After descending, spend time around the Sulthan Bathery region and visit Jain Temple at Sulthan Bathery, subject to opening and access conditions. The surviving stone structure reflects the historical presence of Jain communities and old trading connections in this part of Wayanad, adding a cultural element to a day otherwise strongly shaped by the district's natural landscape.

Later, proceed towards Soochipara Waterfalls (Sentinel Rock Waterfalls) if weather, road conditions and official access permit. The waterfall lies within a forested setting and generally involves walking from the designated access area. During heavy rain or unsafe conditions, access may be restricted. After completing the day's sightseeing, return to Vythiri and relax at the hotel. Overnight stay in Vythiri.

After breakfast, check out from the hotel and begin the return journey towards Calicut. The road descends through the Western Ghats, giving another opportunity to appreciate Wayanad's forested slopes, plantation landscapes and the sharp geographical transition between Kerala's highlands and coastal plains.

Depending on the confirmed departure time, a suitable short stop can be made around Lakkidi View Point or another accessible scenic location if it was missed on the arrival day. The schedule should remain flexible because mountain-road traffic and weather can affect travel time between Vythiri and Calicut.

Continue to Calicut Airport or railway station for the onward journey. The short Wayanad Expedition concludes after combining the mountain setting of Vythiri with Pookode Lake, Edakkal Caves, Jain Temple at Sulthan Bathery, Soochipara Waterfalls and the scenic Western Ghats drive.
