Religious & Heritage Tour Of South India
Hyderabad - Warangal - Vijayawada - Amaravathi - Visakhapatnam - Delhi
At a glance
Buddhist history in southern India is spread across ancient settlement sites, stupas, monasteries, archaeological remains and museum collections rather than concentrated in a single pilgrimage town. This 6 Nights 7 Days South India Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour follows that heritage across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, beginning in Hyderabad and travelling through Warangal, Vijayawada, Amaravathi and Visakhapatnam before the onward journey to Delhi.
The route places particular emphasis on Andhra Pradesh's Buddhist archaeological landscape. Amaravathi became renowned for its great stupa and sculptural tradition, while the Visakhapatnam region preserves important hilltop Buddhist complexes overlooking the coast. Together, these sites help illustrate the historical spread of Buddhism and the role played by trade routes and communities of the Deccan and eastern coast.
The journey also includes selected non-Buddhist landmarks where they provide useful historical context to the destinations on the route. Hyderabad introduces the Deccan's later urban heritage, Warangal reflects the legacy of the Kakatiyas, and Vijayawada acts as the gateway to the Buddhist remains of the lower Krishna region. The result is a pilgrimage-oriented itinerary supported by archaeology, regional history and cultural context.
Arrive in Hyderabad, meet the driver and transfer to the hotel. After check-in and sufficient rest, begin with an introduction to the historic city, whose monuments reflect several later periods of Deccan history and provide cultural context before the journey turns towards the Buddhist archaeological sites farther east.
Visit Charminar, the landmark monument at the heart of Hyderabad's old city, and see the nearby Mecca Masjid, subject to applicable religious and security regulations. Walk through the surrounding old-city streets where markets and historic buildings preserve a very different urban character from modern Hyderabad.
Depending on arrival time and official opening hours, visit the Salar Jung Museum, whose wide-ranging collections cover Indian and international art, decorative objects and historic artefacts. If the museum cannot be comfortably covered on arrival day, the programme can be adjusted according to timing. Return to the hotel. Overnight stay in Hyderabad.
After breakfast, leave Hyderabad and travel towards Warangal, the former centre of the Kakatiya dynasty. Although today's programme is not primarily Buddhist, the city's medieval monuments provide important historical context to the Deccan before the itinerary continues into Andhra Pradesh's Buddhist heritage zone.
Visit Warangal Fort, where surviving gateways, stone architectural fragments and archaeological remains recall the scale of the former Kakatiya capital. The monumental stone gateways are among the most recognisable features of the site and demonstrate the distinctive architectural language associated with the dynasty.
Continue to the Thousand Pillar Temple at Hanamkonda, subject to current visitor access and restoration conditions. The temple is known for its Kakatiya-period stonework and religious importance. After sightseeing, check into the hotel and keep the evening free. Overnight stay in Warangal.
After breakfast, check out and begin the journey from Warangal towards Vijayawada. The day's transfer moves from Telangana into Andhra Pradesh and towards the lower Krishna River region, an area that played an important role in the development and spread of Buddhism in ancient southern India.
Arrive in Vijayawada and check into the hotel. Depending on available time, visit the surroundings of Undavalli Caves, a rock-cut complex near the Krishna River with sculptures and architectural features representing a later religious landscape of the region. Access depends on official opening hours.
Later, spend time around the Krishna River and the city's central surroundings. Vijayawada serves as the practical base for the following day's journey to Amaravathi, where the tour reaches one of its most significant Buddhist archaeological destinations. Return to the hotel for rest. Overnight stay in Vijayawada.
After breakfast, travel from Vijayawada towards Amaravathi, historically associated with one of the most important Buddhist centres of the lower Krishna valley. The archaeological remains here connect the journey directly with the long history of Buddhist patronage in Andhra Pradesh.
Visit the remains of the Amaravathi Stupa (Mahachaitya), the celebrated Buddhist monument that once developed into an elaborate stupa complex. Although much of its sculptural material is now preserved in museums, the archaeological site remains central to understanding Amaravathi's significance as an ancient Buddhist centre.
Continue to the Amaravathi Archaeological Museum, subject to official opening hours, where sculptures and archaeological material from the region provide greater context for the stupa and its artistic tradition. Also see the modern Dhyana Buddha Statue where accessible before completing the day's programme. Overnight stay in the Amaravathi/Vijayawada region according to the confirmed hotel arrangement.
After breakfast, leave the Amaravathi region and proceed towards Visakhapatnam according to the confirmed transport arrangements. This is a substantial travel sector, so the day should be paced around the actual road, rail or scheduled flight arrangement rather than overloaded with additional sightseeing.
On arrival in Visakhapatnam, transfer to the hotel and take time to rest. The city lies between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal and serves as the base for several important Buddhist archaeological complexes located on hills around the coastal region.
If arrival timing permits, spend the evening along Ramakrishna Beach or enjoy a short drive through the coastal area. The principal Buddhist sites are reserved for the following day, allowing adequate daylight and time to appreciate their archaeological setting. Overnight stay in Visakhapatnam.
After breakfast, begin the main Buddhist heritage day with Thotlakonda Buddhist Complex, situated on a hill overlooking the coast. The archaeological remains include stupas, monastic structures and other features associated with an organised Buddhist establishment that once occupied this strategically positioned site.
Continue to Bavikonda Buddhist Complex, another important hilltop archaeological site in the Visakhapatnam region. Its surviving remains provide further evidence of the Buddhist monastic communities that developed along this section of the eastern coast. Access to archaeological areas remains subject to current official conditions.
Later, proceed towards Bojjannakonda and Lingalakonda near Sankaram, where rock-cut features, stupas and archaeological remains represent a long period of Buddhist activity. After completing the visit, return to Visakhapatnam. The day brings together several of the tour's most important Buddhist sites in their original landscape settings. Overnight stay in Visakhapatnam.
After breakfast, check out according to the confirmed flight schedule. If departure timing provides sufficient free time, enjoy a short visit to an accessible section of the Visakhapatnam waterfront rather than attempting another distant archaeological excursion before the airport transfer.
Transfer to Visakhapatnam Airport for the scheduled flight to Delhi. Flight schedules and routing should be confirmed at the time of booking, and airfare remains separate unless specifically included in the final package arrangements.
Arrive in Delhi and complete the scheduled arrival transfer or onward connection as confirmed. The seven-day journey concludes after linking Hyderabad and Warangal's wider Deccan heritage with the Buddhist legacy of Amaravathi Stupa, Thotlakonda, Bavikonda, Bojjannakonda and Lingalakonda.
